  • Day 24 of 170: Peja Lives

    Patrick
    20 Nov 2009 | 10:53 am
Line of the Night: Peja Stojakovic (0.88). Left for dead through the first two weeks of the season, the Chris Paul injury left the Hornets in desperate need of someone with even a minimal ability to create some offense. Well, as long as his shot is falling, Peja is the man for that job. In a 110-103 win over the Suns, Peja was stroking it hard and he finished the game with 7 threes, scoring 25 points and adding 13 rebounds. As long as Paul remains out, the Hornets are going to be Peja’s team. And if that doesn’t scare you Hornets’ fans, you really might want to get yourself evaluated.

Some technical difficulties for GMTR over the past couple of days (more on that later), but we’ve busted through it like LeBron on a fast break. Here is the daily write-up for yesterday (Nov 19th). Today’s write-up coming shortly. Line of the Night: Elton Brand (1.32). As Erik more delicately said on Points in the Paint, it’s put up or shut up time for Brand now that Marreese Speights is out for the next two months with a torn MCL. Well, it looks like the old man isn’t ready to shut up quite yet, as Brand played a season high 42 minutes and finished with 19 points, 11 boards…

    Nels
    18 Nov 2009 | 6:04 am
Line of the Night: Nene Hilario (1.27) still has a first and last name around these parts. If he could turn out 4 steals and 4 blocks per game for a whole season, though, we’d call him whatever he wanted. He also had 20 and 10 with 61% from the floor and 80% from the line – an extraordinary feat for Mr. Hilario. Honorable Mentions: LeBron – who needs only one name – (1.07) missed out on his 4th LotN of the season, but helped his owners nevertheless with: 31, 5, and 12, plus a steal and 2 blocks. KobeBrook Lopez (0.87) might not be going by two names for long if he…

    Patrick
    17 Nov 2009 | 6:48 am
Line of the Night: Dirk Nowitzki (1.12) may not make an exciting first round pick on draft day, but Dirk owners have got to be excited with what he’s doing so far this year. In an overtime win against the Bucks, Dirk’s latest line included 32 points with 11 boards and a couple steals. After 11 games, his stats are up across the board over last year and he’s partying like its 2005. If Josh Howard ever returns Dirk’s stats could see a drop back to 2008-09 levels, but for now just ride him like a German donkey. Honorable Mentions: It’s an all-Hawks love affair – Josh Smith (0.76)…

Line of the Night: Kevin Durant (0.96) joins Chris Paul and LeBron James as the third player to get a second Line of the Night for 2009-10. Durant made it happen with 40 points on 56% shooting with 2 threes, adding 8 rebounds, a steal and a block. Honorable Mentions: Channing Frye (0.87) bounced back to his run of Ridiculousity with 6 three-pointers. At least his game log at this point provides some modicum of proof that his season-starting run was a fluke. Andrew…

  • Andrew Bogut Injury – Fantasy Impact

    Stephen Kersey
    19 Nov 2009 | 8:55 pm
Andrew Bogut, the Australian bigman for the Milwaukee Bucks, could miss up to a month due to a strained leg muscle. The injury occurred on Wednesday in the game that saw the Bucks beat the New Jersey Nets by a final score of 99-85. For Bogut fantasy owners, this is bad news for a player who is having arguably the best season of his career. The 24-year-old former number one overall pick is averaging 16.1 points, 9.2 rebounds and 1.44 blocks while shooting 56.5% from the field. Bogut has had a history of injuries so while this news isn’t horribly surprising, it is unfortunate for fantasy…
  • Ronnie Brown Injury Update – Fantasy Impact

    18 Nov 2009 | 8:55 pm
Ronnie Brown was on his way to have the best season of his career. However, that all changed after he hurt his foot in Week 10. Further tests determined that Brown will miss the remainder of the 2009 fantasy football season. For fantasy owners, this is devastating news. Brown was undervalued heading into fantasy drafts and has been a very consistent players so far this season. Now the main running back on the Miami Dolphins will be Ricky Williams. The good news for the Dolphins is that Williams has arguably been the best backup running back in the NFL this season. He’s averaging a…

When involved, Dwayne Bowe is one of the most explosive wide receivers in fantasy football. But Dwayne Bowe fantasy owners are sad right now after it was announced that the Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver will miss the next four games due to violating the NFL’s policy on performance enhancing drugs. Bowe will miss Week 11 against the Steelers, Week 12 against the Chargers, Week 13 against the Broncos and Week 14 against the Bills. Considering that many fantasy football leagues have their playoffs scheduled to begin in Week 14, this is devastating news in the fantasy world. On the…

    16 Nov 2009 | 8:55 pm
According to multiple sources, Larry Johnson is close to signing with the Cincinnati Bengals. The former Kansas City Chiefs running back is expected to be signed by the end of the day on Tuesday. For fantasy football owners, it would be tempting to believe the hype and go hard after Larry Johnson. But once you look at the situation closely, you’ll realize that Johnson shouldn’t hold much value right now. First of all, Cedric Benson has been great for Cincinnati this season. As long as he’s healthy, he’ll get the vast majority of the carries. The Bengals also have…

Check your fantasy football waiver wire for these players heading into Week 11: QB Chris Simms, Denver Broncos Kyle Orton hurt his ankle and Chris Simms played the second half. Although he was bad, Simms has a decently high ceiling going forward. He has good receivers and a coach that seems to know what he’s doing. Well, I missed both of them in the previous round. The unstoppable Cleveland juggernaut was stopped. The surging Denver Nuggets likewise. Poor free throw shooting has not yet been the Achilles Heel that it always has been in the past. I’ve got to think that Don Nelson could have coached a team to a victory over the Magic, if he had had the opportunity. I don’t know that the coaches opposing Orlando were savvy enough to take advantage of Orlando’s weaknesses. The Lakers, on the other hand, have faced very good and experienced coaches and have struggled somewhat, but have…

We have had some pretty good series thus far. Expect them only to get better from here on out as the top teams have proven themselves worthy to be in the Eastern and Western Conference Finals Western Conference Finals Denver Nuggets (2) at Los Angeles Lakers (1) – A month before the end of the season, I would have said that nobody had a chance of taking out the Lakers. Since then, the Nuggets have gone on a rampage, smashing team after team. Now that the first round Eastern Conference matchups have finished, it’s time to make the prediction on who will be the competitors in the Eastern Conference finals. Atlanta Hawks (4) at Cleveland Cavaliers (1) – Cleveland was dominant in the first round, just as everyone predicted. Atlanta just barely knocked off the Miami Heat. Atlanta is good enough at home to win at least one game. I’m not sure they can win all of their home games, though — or any of their games in Cleveland. I really, really like Atlanta. I want them to make it a series. They are so talented that…

The wait is over as the first two days of the 2009-2010 NBA season is over and done. We saw strong teams get beaten, players coming back (Mr. Arenas!), rookies who don’t play like one and more and more exciting plays. It’s just exciting isn’t it? So here are some of our thoughts from the first two days. The Cleveland Cavaliers are 0-2 after losing to the Boston Celtics and the Toronto Raptors. The 2008-2009 season has been over for months now and it’s time to move on to the next. This includes the players with their new teams, new trades and even the 2009-2010 NBA rookies. While everyone has been talking about Blake Griffin and Ricky Rubio and how weak this draft is compared with other drafts, I couldn’t help but search the top plays for the rookies of last year. These plays seem to be really nice but not that awesome and I wonder if this year’s rookie class can show us more highlights. Rubio behind the back pass (if he plays)? Ray Rice Photo Credit: Icon SMI Ranks Preview by Andrew Thell You never think it’s going to happen this late in the season, but once again the running back landscape dramatically shifted in Week 10. Brian Westbrook may be done for the season, allowing LeSean McCoy owners to finally cash in on their prized sleeper pick. McCoy should be started in nearly all leagues against a Bears defense allowing 118+ yards per game on the ground and looking soft in all regards. The heavy workload caught up to Cedric Benson and the Bengals at last, making Bernard Scott a viable flex option at Oakland.

Ranks Preview by Andrew Thell We recommended Vince Young as a sneaky play last week, saying, ” … there’s a decent chance Young puts up some rushing yards and scores on the ground against a Bills defense that has already allowed 12 rushing touchdowns and is ceding over 170 yards on the ground per game.” However, we still ranked Young modestly and were pleasantly surprised with his 210 passing yards and passing TD to go along with 29 rushing yards and 1 rushing TD. He’s an equally strong sneaky play this week against a Houston defense that’s better than Buffalo,…
  • Fantasy Football – Week 11 Defense Rankings

    Brian Spencer
    19 Nov 2009 | 5:38 am
Ranks Preview by Brian Spencer It’s hard to believe that we still have two offenses averaging less than 10 points per game: the Oakland Raiders are at 9.8, while the Cleveland Browns are somehow scoring even less at 8.7 per. Both units also average less than 120 total yards per game, which almost seems impossible when you consider that Tennessee Titans RB Chris Johnson is averaging more rushing yards per (121.2) than both of these embarassments do as a team. That should not happen at this level, but then JaMarcus Russell and Brady Quinn shouldn’t be starting quarterbacks either.

The Bears rushing defense is mediocre, but their secondary is in absolute shambles. Anatomy Of a Scorer (Carmelo Anthony vs Lebron James):by T-RexI'm testing out a new type of article.  You hear commentators say things like "Carmelo Anthony is the best pure scorer in basketball" and you may be thinking..."uhhh...what?"  Sometimes these blanket statements are made without justification.  Well, here is my justification.  "Anatomy Of" will be the things you look for in a type of player.  Without further ado!For the first "Anatomy Of", I'm going to be using two players.  Normally I'd only do one.  Scorers have six ways they can score.  I…

Bring Stack Back   By Steve St-Pierre   With veteran Pistons swingmen Rip Hamilton and Tayshaun Prince injured indefinitely, it might be a good time to bring Jerry Stackhouse back to the Motor City.   Stackhouse was said to look good after spending the summer training in Atlanta. He has expressed interest in returning to the Pistons, and the team could use a former fan favorite and quality scorer off the bench.   We've seen what Detroit is getting out of an aging Ben Wallace. Stack would undoubtedly provide similar leadership on and off the court to a youthful squad…

A lot of injuries going around and many players are risky starts tonight.   There are 10 games on the fantasy schedule which should provide ample alternatives if you have to bench some of your starters.  I took a little gamble in the GiveMeTheRock.com Keeper league yesterday and picked up Allen Iverson and dropped Marreese Speights.  It doesn’t look like that gamble is going to pay off as New York reports they aren’t interested in Iverson. Recap of Thursday’s Fantasy happenings around the league.  [DamnLiesandStatistics.com] Fantasy Basketball Boxscore Breakouts for…

I’m taking a few days off from the Daily Boxscore Review and putting the News report back on the blog space.  I’m not finding enough time to do both reports for the site, at least not as well as I’d like.  I enjoy the news report more than the boxscore review, so I’ll probably sacrifice the boxscore column and dedicate more time to the fantasy news.  I’m also considering just doing a Daily Four Factors Boxscore Report for each game rather than posting all the player stats.   We’ll see how it goes over the next few days. Trade rumors involving Samuel…
